Then, we’re off and ready for our first port of call, the stunning medieval town of San Gimignano. Here, you will have two hours to discover the town’s striking contemporary and Renaissance art and its enchanting artisanal shops. Travellers from across the glove flock to San Gimignano to see the amazing examples of medieval architecture it is home to and the beautiful views of the valley and town from San Gimignano’s impressive towers. Indeed, the town’s charm and unique atmosphere is largely thanks to the fourteen surviving grand tower houses built by aristocratic families in San Gamignano’s heyday.
At noon, the tour will move to a local farmhouse for lunch and maybe even a glass of San Gimignano’s famous white wine Vernaccia. Among the most celebrated wines in Tuscany, Vernaccia di San Gimignano has a long history in the region, gaining fame in the Renaissance as a wine fit for the noblest Italian families. Records of the wine grape used to create this delicious drop date back to 1276 in the town’s archives and the grape even appears in Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Following lunch, our next stop is the captivating town of Siena. In Siena, you will be at your leisure until 5 pm and can marvel at the Piazza del Campo, the location of the summer Palio horserace, and the Duomo’s unmistakable black and white marble. Alternately, wander Siena’s historic streets and soak up the sights and sounds of this old town and perhaps even climb the 400-plus steps of the Torre del Mangia for a panoramix view that is well worth the effort.
At 5 pm, with your first magical day complete, your tour manager will take you to a traditional Tuscan farmhouse and the gorgeous villa apartment that will be your base for the rest of your journey.
Today, wine and food take centre stage. If you’re a wine buff or a gourmet, this is definitely your day. Through visits to three different cellars and wineries, you will learn the secrets and history of the Chianti wine region. In addition to sampling different wines, you will also have the chance to taste the area’s famed extra virgin olive oil.
After a morning of filling our glasses, we will then move on to Greve to fill our stomachs. In Greve you will find the most celebrate butcher and delicatessen in Tuscany and will have the opportunity to stock up on the very best regional products.
Finally, in the evening, you can dine at the farmhouse restaurant.
For an ideal end to your tour, following breakfast you will travel to the incredible San Filippo and its outdoor hot springs. As you walk through the amazing woodlands and gaze in awe at the magical waterfalls and small pools, you will think you have been transported to another realm. Deep in the woods you will discover the 48° C hot spring the White Whale as well as a wealth of other pools. You will be free to explore this small village at your leisure before enjoying lunch at a village trattoria.
The final day of your tour continues with a drive through Val d’Orcia and its breath-taking landscapes and a stop at one medieval village for a wine tasting.
At 5 pm you will be returned to Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station with some wonderful memories, some tasty treats and a new appreciation for the beauty of Tuscany.
Matteo was a wonderful guide and host on what was a highlight of our recent fortnight in Tuscany. This full day outing to Bagni San Filippo was our third trip out into the Tuscan countryside from Florence – and provided the best rural scenery by far. This seemed to me to be the most beautiful and least touristy part of Tuscany, and the day we were there, it was only locals enjoying the thermal baths.
The water at the springs wasn’t as hot as we expected – it was only really the pools at the top of the ‘White Whale’ formation (and a few of the rivulets coming off it) that were hot. But the surreal appearance of these opaque whitish pools in a lovely forest setting, the atmosphere and the uniqueness of the experience more than made up for this, and in summer, the cooler pools would be better anyway.
We’d had enough after a couple of hours, and it was great to be able to shower and change in the adjacent hotel as part of our package – which felt like good value for the private and tailored nature of the tour. Matteo’s flexibility and the time available allowed for the spontaneous addition of the nearby hill town of Cortona to our itinerary for a small extra charge to cover petrol. We loved our few hours there – it was enough time to look around, take some great photos, enjoy an aperitivo and then dinner in an authentic local trattoria before the drive back to Florence.
This was a wonderful and memorable way to finish our time in Tuscany, and I highly recommend Matteo and his professional services for these more out-of-the-way and special interest experiences.
As part of a two week traveling experience through Italy, my husband and I met up with Tuscany Untouched and traveled from Florence to San Filippo. What a treasure of a day! Matteo was most thoughtful and helpful in making this day in the Tuscan hills wonderful and memorable. We enjoyed a delicious lunch, basked in the hot springs, and had an excellent dinner with traditional Tuscan flair. The people were lively, the food and wine wonderful, and throughout the day Matteo made sure we were enjoying ourselves. We highly recommend Tuscany Untouched for your personal visit, and hope to visit again!
