About the La Maggiolata of Lucignano
La Maggiolata is an 80-year-old traditional spring festival that will occur in Tuscany on May 19th, 2019. This festival usually takes place on the last two Sundays of May and the goal is to compete to have the most elegant floral float.
At 4 PM on the first Sunday of the festival, the Capitano del Popolo officially declares the opening of the festival. This festival includes parades, dancing, and music to honor the awakening of nature worldwide after winter has ended.
The week between the two Sundays during the festival is known as Settimana Maggiolina, where festival attendees and tourists can take the time to enjoy themselves, take in the Italian culture, and go sightseeing.
The floral floats are the highlight of La Maggiolata, representing the town districts of each competitor. The winner of the floral float competition is announced on the second Sunday by the jury.
On the end of the second Sunday of the festival, the designers and contributors of each float partake in the Battaglia dei Fiori (Battle of the Flowers).
During this event, they gather and battle with the thousands of flowers that have gone into the making of their floats, leaving their carriages completely bare as an end result.
During your tour of Tuscany to attend La Maggiolata, you will be able to book reservations for restaurants around the area and make arrangements for transportation around the region. This will help provide a new level of convenience and enjoyment to your tour of Tuscany.
The Lucignano Region
The Lucignano Region of Tuscany is located between Siena and Arezzo. The village of Lucignano has been extraordinarily maintained through the centuries and is an amazing exemplification of the medieval town planning that was responsible for its formation.
At the center of the village, you will find the square of the Tribunal surrounded by other monuments of historical significance such as the Church of St. Francis.
It is here where the La Maggiolata is held every year when each of the four districts of the village gathers to celebrate the awakening of spring and nature, and to hold a competition for the best floral float.
Each float is completely covered with flowers and each district has to design their own unique float to capture the hearts of the attendees as they parade through the village.
The La Maggiolata is has been a highly significant festival for the past 80 years as it welcomes the new spring season and brings the promise of a fruitful harvest for the year to come. During the festival, you will be able to witness the parades, ancient folk dances, and music from popular bands from all over Italy.
The floral floats that have been built by each district for the parade are the biggest highlight of this event. Each float must compete against each other for the recognition of being the best float of the year.
High-quality food and wine is available for the entire duration of the festival between the two Sundays. There are many perfect sightseeing locations, such as the Bosco Inglese garden, where you will be able to relax, enjoy the festivities, and welcome the approach of spring.
